In every age the Church of Jesus Christ has faced new challenges as well as new opportunities. We are grateful, today, for the widespread growth of the church in much of the world that was once inaccessible. At the same time, serious issues have arisen within the church concerning the trustworthiness of Scripture, the nature of salvation, and the Bible’s teaching on sexuality.
The Authority of Scripture. It is appropriate to begin with the most basic issue, the trustworthiness and authority of Scripture. I had my doctor of ministry students review Adam Hamilton’s attractively written book Making Sense of the Bible (HarperOne, 2014) because of its wide influence. Its flawed understanding of the nature and authority of Scripture has, I fear, led many astray. The lay people in your church may be reading this widely publicized book.
